Researchers say that the traditional c-section procedure, currently focused on a speedy delivery, allows less room for family bonding. In an uncomplicated delivery, they say, speed is usually unnecessary.

The new "natural" procedure starts in the same way, making a cut and delivering the head of the baby. But then the area is cleaned and the curtains are taken down so that both parents can eventually watch the rest of the delivery. Instead of removing the infant right away, doctors stand back and let uterine contractions do their thing.

I'm all for any procedure that makes childbirth more warm and fuzzy and less cold and sterile. But yet, I'm not sure how I'd feel about watching my baby be delivered this way. I've never had a c-section, so moms out there who have, tell us this: Would it be weird to watch your baby emerge from your abdomen? Or would the overwhelming feelings that accompany childbirth outweigh the fact that you're in the middle of major surgery? Is a delivery a delivery no matter the method? Share your thoughts with us in comments.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sarah Palin to be John McCain's running mate - A Mom in the White House?

It's been a week of historical firsts in United States politics! Yesterday's nomination of Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee marks the first time in U.S. history an African-American has been chosen to be a contender for the position of president of the United States.

And earlier today, John McCain made Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska and mother of five, his choice for vice president. While Palin is not the first woman to be selected as a running mate, (that honor belongs to Geraldine Ferraro), she is the first to do it with a baby at home. Palin's youngest son Trig is only ten months old!

The photogenic Palin has appeared in Vogue magazine, but she's definitely not a wimpy woman. The Alaskan governor returned to work a mere three days after giving birth to Trig, and her hobbies include hunting and ice fishing (one of the most frigid and miserable ways I've ever spent an afternoon) and is facing the deployment of her oldest son to Iraq in September.

It wasn't terribly long ago that blacks and women weren't even allowed to vote to vote in this country. There's no way to erase that embarrassing past, but we at least we can now celebrate how far we've come!

In my experience, the only thing that even comes close to that feeling is actually sitting next to your teen as she takes the wheel for the first time.

Hopefully by the time a kid is ready to solo, you've taught them well. They know the rules of the road and the importance of always wearing a seat belt. Unfortunately, a new study shows that many teens are forgetting that seat belt lesson when mom and dad aren't around to remind them, especially when they are in the passenger seat.

The study, conducted by Meharry Medical College in Nashville using data collected by national Youth Risk Behavior surveys, finds that just 59% of drivers aged 16 and older say they always wear a seat belt. That percentage sounds frighteningly low to me, but not as bad as this one: only 42% of teen passengers say they always buckle up.

The numbers regarding teen drivers are scary, indeed. 5,000 teens over the age of sixteen die each year in car accidents in the United States. Of those deaths, 40% are passengers in the car. Teaching your child to buckle up when driving is an important lesson, but clearly not the only one. If you have a kid of driving age, maybe you want to share these statistics with him or her. It sure can't hurt.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Internet goodness: The Nie Nie auctions

Filed under: In the news, Shopping & recalls

We're accustomed to hearing about all the horrible things the internet is capable of: online predators, scam sites, viral downloads, cyberstalking, anonymous meanness. But what we don't hear very often is the incredible good that can happen when the people behind all those keyboards are inspired to act.

Stephanie Nielson is the fun kind of mother who does things like marking the start of a new school by preparing a company-worthy dinner complete with good china, fancy glassware, roses, and handmade tiara for her daughters. She's also the well-liked blogger behind Nie Nie Dialogues, where she records life with four young children and the husband she's clearly still smitten with.

On August 16th, Stephanie, along with her beloved husband Christian, and pilot instructor, Doug Kinneard, were in a plane crash. Kinneard died from his injuries, Christian has burns over 30% of his body, and Stephanie, better known as Nie Nie on the internet, remains in a chemically induced coma while being treated for the burns that cover 80% of her body.

While relatives take turns caring for the Nielson children, bloggers and internet sellers of all types have sprung into action to raise money to attempt to off-set what are sure to be staggering medical expenses. Generous and amazing crafters have donated wonderful items to benefit the Nielsons, while others have used their computer skills to organize and list everything in a wonderfully organized manner.

It's not too early to think about that Christmas list, or upcoming baby arrivals or birthdays. Knowing that the money spent will help a family in need makes any gift purchased from a Nie Nie auction twice as wonderful and that's just not a feeling one gets from an Amazon.com purchase.

It's really wonderful to see the goodness pouring out of the internet in response to such a tragic event.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Simplicity Convertible Bassinet Sleepers unsafe

Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Health & safety, In the news, Baby essentials, Sleep, Shopping & recalls
This product recall is a little different than others in that it isn't actually a product recall. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets do not meet the safety standards regarding spacing of the metal bars and pose an entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants. The products would be recalled, but SFCA Inc., the company which purchased all of Simplicity, Inc.'s assets at public auction in April, 2008, refuses to recall them. SFCA claims they are not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity.

Clearly somebody needs to be responsible for the products because according to the CPSC, two infants have already strangled to death between the bassinet's metal bars - a 5-month old girl earlier this month and a 4-month-old girl in September of 2007. Since SFCA won't recall them, the CPSC is issuing a warning and urging all consumers to share this warning with day care centers, consignment stores, family and friends to ensure no more children are injured or killed sleeping in this bassinet.

The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets have metal bars spaced farther apart than the 2 3/8 inches maximum allowed by federal crib safety standards. The metal bars are covered by an adjustable fabric flap which is attached by Velcro. The fabric is folded down when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the Velcro is not properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. This warning does not cover bassinets produced in recent months that have fabric permanently attached over the lower bar.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

For Better or For Worse - What was old is new again

Filed under: Celeb parenting, In the news

(Click the image above to see a larger version of the comic strip.)

When I was growing up, there was always a "For Better or For Worse" comic cut from the paper and stuck to our refrigerator. The Pattersons may have been an imaginary family, but Lynn Johnston, their creator, made them real by touching on issues both big and small that many families deal with. When I became a parent, I even cut out one or two and put them on my own refrigerator, relating easily to daughter-in-law Deanna's life as a busy mom of two young children.

%Gallery-30681%

The strip has looked a little different for the last several months. Lynn Johnston, seeing retirement on the horizon, has been running a series of flashbacks that allowed her to lighten her workload and revisit early moments in the Patterson's life. This Sunday, Lynn will give readers what every good story needs... an ending. The strip will be the endpoint of the Patterson's story, but it won't be the end of "For Better or For Worse."

Instead, Lynn's going back to the drawing board, literally. She's going to do a series of "new-runs," starting the story over again in 1979, but drawing new pictures and adding in some additional new dialogue. "My early work in the strip was freer, it was more spontaneous," she said. "But I want to combine the confidence and experience [I have now] with that freedom -- that's the best of both worlds."

Our town's paper dropped "For Better or For Worse" when Lynn started doing the flashback strips. They got a lot of complaints from loyal followers of the Patterson family, who wanted to see the story go to its end. Lynn addresses that possibility, knowing that the concept of a "new-run" is unique in the industry, but says that she'd rather write for readers than for editors.

She's created more than a comic strip over the last 29 years; she's created a family that people can really relate to, a family that feels very real (just take a look at their Wikipedia page to see what I mean), so I'm betting that "For Ever or For Worse" will continue to be popular, as long as Lynn keeps drawing it.

If you want to see the end of the Patterson's story and the beginning of Lynn's new journey, but can't follow it in the paper, you can see the daily comics at FBorFW.com.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kids meals priced by weight

Filed under: Kids 5-7, Kids 8-11, Teens & tweens, Eating & nutrition, In the news, Mealtime
The management of the Oulton Hall Hotel near Leads in the UK have an odd sense of humor. They thought they would have a 'bit of fun' and make parents pay for their children's Sunday dinner based on weight. Not the weight of the food the child consumes, but the weight of the child. A kid who weighs 5st (70 pounds) would be charged £5, with the price increasing along with the weight of the child.

Child obesity expert Professor Paul Gateley isn't laughing and believes the public weigh-ins would be humiliating for a child . "What child wants to be pulled on to scales and judged? The undoubted outcome is that they will feel bad. It's especially likely to upset girls, who tend to become aware of their weight as early as seven."

Oulton Hall spokesman Nigel Massey thinks Gateley just needs to get over it. "There will no doubt be people who say it's not politically correct and have a grumble about it. Well, frankly they should get a life and stop being so miserable." Ah, that 'screw you' attitude is so refreshing in the hospitality industry.

Massey goes on to say that the pay-as-you-weigh program is entirely voluntary and was conceived as a way to help parents save a bit of money when dining out. If a child declines to be weighed, the regular kid's meal price of £11.25 will be charged, which is half of the adult meal.

I am not all that great with math and less so when it involves converting weights and monies, but it does seem like this would be a good deal for parents with young and small children. But the program is open to kids as old as 15. Do you think think Professor Gateley is being overly sensitive? Or should he, as Massey suggests, stop being so miserable?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

StyleDash is now StyleList!

Filed under: Just for moms, Just for dads, Life & style, In the news
Remember when you used to care about fashion -- when you used to know who wore what to the Oscars and the Emmys, and when the arrival of the 25 pound September Vogue was an occasion to be celebrated? You know, back before you had kids and everything you owned had to be machine washable and playground appropriate.

Remember that?

You can still indulge your fashionable side, even if it's just vicariously -- and we've got a great place to do it. Our favorite lifestyle blog, StyleDash, has merged with AOL's style channel, StyleList, to create the Internet's go-to site for all things fashion.

If you're looking for the things you loved at StyleDash, they're all still there at the StyleList blog -- and more great things are coming!

Because even if you've been wearing that same t-shirt for three days (and nights) it's fun to see what's out there in the world of fashion. Hop on over and take a look! You might feel inspired to get dressed. It was never openly admitted in class, but I had ascertained from TV and movies that giving birth hurts very, very, very much and the silly-sounding breathing exercises (Hee! Hee! Hee! HAW!) were the best diversionary tactics available to distract one from the pain in her nether regions.

Then I had to have a C-section and all that training went to waste.

A recent study in Sydney, Australia queried mothers on their views on complications ranging as minor as prolonged birth and superficial tears to as major as anal and urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse and severe tearing and compared these opinions with those of doctors and midwives. The results were that first time birthers were much more willing to take risks in order to have a natural birth than were the doctors or midwives.

One out of every 4 UK pregnancies results in a C-section due to potential complications like the baby lying in the wrong position for natural birth.

According to Philip Steer, editor of the journal where the study was published, the clinical responses may, "indicate that doctors are biased by their inevitable involvement in complex cases, or labors where things have gone wrong."

I think another word for that is "experience." Sure, women have given birth unassisted thousands of years on their own, but it's important to remember that many of them (and their babies) died in the process. Stuff can go wrong, doctors realize what that stuff is, and try to keep it from happening to their patients. I personally didn't have a problem with that when my birthing situation went awry, because at the end of the proceedings, I was alive and so was my baby.

In an era of malpractice lawsuits, it's understandable why a doctor may go ahead and suggest a C-section rather than take risks. As a society, we've essentially backed the medical field into this corner and the result is C-sections that may not all be necessary and even though the mom may be willing to give it the old college try.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mom presses charges after 12-year-old son crashes van

Filed under: Just for moms, Teens & tweens, Health & safety, In the news

(Click the photo for the Top 5 Child Felons)

We've covered quite a few stories here where a kid climbs into the driver's seat of someone's car and takes it out for a spin. Sometimes the kid is looking for chocolate. Sometimes it's an Applebee's fix. Other times, there is no destination in mind, just a joyride. Usually the ride - and the story - ends when the kid crashes the car into something. This ride ends that way, too. But unfortunately, this is probably just the beginning of the story for this kid.

Unlike the car-thieving kids mentioned above, the Longmont, Colorado boy who took his mother's van in the wee hours of the night isn't a toddler. He's a 12-year-old who police say was trying to prove to his 14-year-old friend that he could drive. Long story short, he can't drive and proved that by crashing the van into someone's garage.

He managed to back out of the smashed garage and flee the scene. He returned mom's van to her driveway and went back to his 14-year-old friend's house, where he was having a sleepover. Except somebody should have told him that you can't actually smash a car into someone's garage and think you can get away with it. Police easily tracked him down using the clues he left behind - a license plate at the scene of the crash and a broken windshield with bits of fence in it on mom's van.

%Gallery-29302%

Mom, being the registered owner of the van, got a visit from the police and she was none too happy. She immediately said she wanted to press charges and the kid was arrested that afternoon. He's now in the Boulder County Juvenile Detention Center facing a whole slew of possible charges: aggravated motor vehicle theft, driving without a valid license, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to notify police, and reckless driving.

Pressing criminal charges against your 12-year-old child may seem harsh, but I think this woman is probably doing the only thing she could do under the circumstances. A non-family member certainly would have pressed charges and the boy could have seriously hurt or even killed someone. I feel bad for this mother, but applaud her for exercising some tough love on a clearly out of control child. What would you have done?

View Poll

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Woman refuses to return library books, goes to JAIL

Filed under: Fun & activities, Places to go, Life & style, In the news, Weird but true, Education, That's entertainment, Resources

Let this be a lesson to us all. If you're going to borrow library books from your local library, please be reminded that "borrow" is the operative word. You get a library card (generally for free) and thereby enter into an agreement wherein said library lends you books for a few weeks...and then you give them BACK. If you don't, you get hit with a meager fine. Last time I borrowed a book, the fine was about five cents a day. Seriously--it's been a LONG TIME since I've borrowed a book. In other words, there's really no incentive to not return the books that were lent to you for free by the very nice people who work at the library. Sometimes, however, when you take those things for granted, things get nasty.

Just ask Heidi Dalibor, who refused to return her copies of White Oleander and Angels and Demons. Nor did Ms. Dalibor remit the fines she owed to the library from which she borrowed the page-turners despite the notices she received in the mail. Furthermore, she declined to take note of the court citation issued to her when she didn't respond to the Grafton Library's calls and letters to her. The result? She was arrested. Cops showed up at her family's house, handcuffed her, and booked her for violating the "overdue library materials" ordinance! Seriously.

My words of advice? Return your library books, people. Or, at the very least, see what policies your town has regarding whether or not you return them.

Unfortunately, it's that fastball that has gotten him banned from pitching for the co-ed Youth Baseball League of New Haven.

Scott's coach and parents say that he's being unfairly targeted and that league officials are picking on him because he turned down an invitation to join the league's champion team, which happens to be sponsored by a league administrator. League officials say Scott was banned due to safety concerns. Although everyone admits that Scott has never hit anyone with a pitch, league attorney Peter Noble says parents are afraid their kids will get hurt at bat. "He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower," Noble said. "There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport."

League officials have suggested that Scott play another position, pitch against older players or even play in a different league. But last week, Scott took the mound despite the ban. In response, the other team forfeited the game and walked off the field. This did not go over well with Scott's mom, who Noble says became irate and threatened league officials. "I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho's mother exhibited Wednesday night," Noble said.

The Scotts have gotten their own lawyer and are looking into their legal options. "You don't have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it's wrong," attorney John Williams said. "Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?"

What is happening to Jericho Scott may seem unfair, but I don't know that I would characterize it as punishment for being too good. By that logic, forcing beginner players to face a 40-mile-per-hour fastball is punishing them for not being good enough. The suggestion to play with an older team seems like a good solution to this problem and I wonder why he doesn't take it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kids treated like smokers on planes

Last month a mom traveling with four kids, including an autistic son and a daughter with cerebral palsy, were detained in Phoenix and not permitted to board their connecting flight to Seattle because her kids were unruly on the previous flight.

However you feel about that incident, a recent study says that 85% of those polled believe that airlines should have a section reserved for adults traveling with children. When I first heard this statistic, I was initially indignant. Our society calls for tolerance of all types of people. What about kids? Should they be segregated like smokers, their cries the equivalent of carcinogenic second-hand smoke? The quality of air travel has declined enough without being forced to sit every flight in the back of the plane next to the smelly bathrooms.

Besides, one of the things I love about air travel is being mixed in with business travelers, teens, and senior citizens. Not being segregated is good for kids. How else will they learn to behave in "mixed" company? It's the same problem I have with dining out. If kids don't do it they'll never know. Ditto for restaurants that limit kid's menu options to fried finger foods that never require them to expand their palate or use a knife. At some point we have to civilize them.

But then I recalled my worst trip ever. I was traveling with my baby and three year-old and we had the misfortune of being seated next to a man who made no bones about his displeasure at being seated next to us - all this before my kids had even done anything. As karma would have it, he was treated to an inconsolable baby. Plus, my three year old uncharacteristically peed on her seat while sleeping. The seat was soaked and the airline blanket I subsequently put under her (what else could I do?) did nothing to mask the smell of urine for the remaining two hours of the flight. Needless to say, it was a long trip to Phoenix.

While I secretly felt that the grumpy old guy deserved it, the truth is that the entire situation was made worse because he was totally stressing me out. If I had been seated next to another parent with kids, I would have probably been more relaxed and better able to calm down my infant. Also, when I think back on my own childhood traveling memories, I recall looking for the other kids on the flight. Kids think it's fun to be around other kids and seating them together may encourage them to make friends and entertain each other (rather than kick the back of some poor soul's seat out of boredom).

When I got over my parental defensiveness, I realized that perhaps someones over-priced, over-cramped trip to Minneapolis is not the place for me to do my "civilizing." A family section on airplanes is a good idea and much like Chuck E Cheese's, one of the many little indignities that parents just have to accept and endure.

For more on Rachel visit her website at www.rachelcamposduffy.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Women having fewer kids, if any

Filed under: Just for moms, In the news, Mommy wars
A new Census Bureau report confirms something most of us already suspected: women are waiting longer to have children than they did 30 years ago. What might be a little surprising is the fact that more women than ever are choosing not to have children at all. In fact, the numbers show that a whopping 20 percent of women ages 40 to 44 have never had children.

"A lot of women are not having any children," said Jane Lawler Dye, a Census Bureau researcher. "It used to be sort of expected that there was a phase of life where you had children, and a lot of women aren't doing that now,"she said.

The report also reveals that the more education a woman has, the less likely she is to become a mother. Clearly more women are taking advantages of the opportunities available now that didn't exist 30 years ago. But these numbers suggest - at least to me - that women may be giving up on the idea of 'having it all'. Sure, the big job can be managed at the same time as a full family life. But it isn't easy and eventually something has to give. It would seem that for many women, what gives is motherhood.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Abandoning your children now legal in Nebraska

Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Health & safety, In the news, Weird but true
Every state in the U.S. now has what is called a "safe haven" law. Intended to prevent unwanted babies from being abandoned just any old place, the law allows desperate parents to leave their babies at hospitals with no questions asked.

Until recently, Nebraska was the only state without a safe haven law. But about a month ago, they passed their own version and added a unique twist. Unlike other states who are trying to protect newborn babies with the law, Nebraska wants to protect all unwanted children and therefore allows a minor of any age to be abandoned at a safe haven hospital. What's more, the law doesn't even specify that it must be a parent who abandons the child. Which means the babysitter, the neighbor or anyone else can surrender custody of a child.

Adam Pertman, a frequent critic of safe-haven laws is especially critical of this one. "Whether the kid is disabled or unruly or just being a hormonal teenager, the state is saying: 'Hey, we have a really easy option for you,'" he says.

So far, there has been no reports of children of any age being abandoned at Nebraska hospitals since the law went into effect.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Measles cases at a 12-year high

Filed under: Preschoolers, Kids 5-7, Health & safety, Medical conditions, In the news
It's the time of year when school nurses across the country are looking over student's immunization records to make sure they've had all the shots they need in order to attend class. But as we've discussed here many times before, not all students will be required to show proof of immunizations before being allowed in school. Every state in the U.S. allows students to skip the shots if their parents object for medical reasons and most states allow an exemption for religious reasons. And with the growing fears that autism and other disorders might be tied to immunizations, more parents are claiming those exemptions.

Skipping the shots may give some parents peace of mind, but it is also being blamed for the increase in measles cases. The first half of 2008 saw 131 cases of the highly contagious disease, compared to just 42 in the entirety of 2007. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 112 of this year's cases were in people who were either unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status.

"At the national level, I am concerned about our situation," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "Every year, the U.S. experiences importation of measles. What is different this year is once it is imported, we are seeing it spread to more people, and most of that spread is to people under 20."

Dr. Neal Halsey, director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, says that many parents who don't immunize mistakenly believe that the risk of contracting measles is very low. "That is, unfortunately, a false belief," he says. "It is important we maintain high disease vaccination. Getting vaccinated is the safest thing we can do for children."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

11-year-old forced to shut down veggie stand

Filed under: Kids 8-11, Money & work, In the news
Lemonade stands are a rite of passage for kids, their first foray into the world of entrepreneurship. Kids may haul out a table and chair in front of their house to earn a little spare change, or they may have more elaborate setups to raise funds for their group or charity. Rarely, do officials bother them about zoning ordinances or permits.

Some Clayton, California residents are saying that 11-year-old Katie Lewis's organic produce stand is little different than any other child's lemonade stand. She makes about $20 a week for her savings account selling fresh fruits and vegetables at her roadside stand, but last week Clayton city officials forced her to shut down, saying that her business violates zoning rules and health regulations.

Katie's parents are stunned and are asking for an exception, while the community is split on whether or not the city is being too heavy-handed. Some applaud their "no exceptions" rule, but others think that Katie should be allowed to run her business. I think I'd ask the officials, this: Why is it ok for kids to sell lemonade, but not lemons (or zucchini or watermelon, for that matter?)

What do you think? Should Katie be allowed to sell her veggies, or is the city correct in shutting her down?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dora the Explorer getting a makeover?

Filed under: Toddlers, Preschoolers, Kids 5-7, In the news, Media
Dora the Explorer may be one of Nickelodeon's most popular characters, but she's no Hannah Montana. Some of us would say that's a good thing, since she is designed to appeal to much younger audience. But, according to a source, the powers that be over at Nickelodeon want to give the bilingual cutie a makeover in an attempt to draw in the older kids.

First up for the Dora transformation is a new, feminine look. Maybe put her in a skirt and fix her hair up a little? Add some bows to the backpack and color the map pink? Next, get the girl some human friends. The source says they are considering adding a group of "Explorer Girls" to the animated cast. If these Explorer Girls follow the typical kid's show formula, you can expect a smart one, a pretty one and maybe a prissy one who doesn't like to get dirty.

If all that goes well, Dora may soon find herself featured on the big screen. Nickelodeon isn't commenting, but the source says they are considering a full-length feature film featuring Dora as an older kid. "Dora is as popular as she's ever been, and now has a second generation of viewers that we would love to serve," the company said.

I sure hope they don't ruin Dora. Sure, my 7-year-old has zero interest in that "baby show" now, but she loved it when she was younger. As do lots of little kids today. Does everything have to be about appealing to the tween audience these days?

%Gallery-29253%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It's official - smoking in movies causes teens to smoke

Filed under: Teens & tweens, Health & safety, In the news, Media, That's entertainment

Word on the street is that smoking in movies is causing teens to be more likely to light up themselves. In a report issued Thursday by the National Cancer Institute ads for smoking and depictions of smoking in film make teens more likely to smoke. The report also countered the tobacco industry's claims that the $13 billion (yes, billion, when we have people starving to death on the streets and can't pay our mortgages) spent on promotion was to increase brand loyalty. Rather, according to the report, the only thing it increased was someone's chances of smoking--especially if that person was a teenager.

The report considered over 1,000 studies of how media impacts use of tobacco. It also noted that three fourths of recent hit films contained smoking, and that particular brands were easily identified in a third of the films. Perhaps as a preemptive strike six of the major movie studios recently claimed they would add anti-smoking ads to the DVD versions of their films. This of course has little bearing on the teen who sees the film in the theater, where there will be no such warning (only that smoking is not allowed in theaters).

According to Dr. Janet Collins, who runs the chronic disease prevention and health promotion at the U.S. Center for Disease Control, smoking, tobacco use, the promotion of both, etc. is "an assault on the nation's health." The report, whose findings she supports, was issued in a timely fashion: the Senate vote to give the FDA control over tobacco regulation.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hot Pockets recalled

Filed under: Health & safety, In the news, Mealtime, Shopping & recalls
If you have a box of Pepperoni Hot Pockets in your freezer, you might want to pull it out and have a look at the box. Some packages of the frozen pizza snacks may contain 'foreign objects', which are most certainly not edible and potentially dangerous.

Nestle Prepared Foods Company has received complaints from four consumers who found hard red plastic pieces as well as some clear flexible rubber stuff in their Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizzas. Roz O'Hearn, a spokesperson for Nestle, says they suspect these pieces might have splintered off from a testing device and become buried inside the product. Some of the pieces may have sharp edges and pose a risk of serious injury should you end up with one in your mouth.

In response, Nestle is recalling about 215,660 pounds of Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizzas packaged in the 54-ounce, 12-pack cartons. Printed on the side of each carton is "8157544614D," "EST 7721A," and "BEST BEFORE JAN2010." These were produced on June 5 and distributed to retail establishments nationwide.

For more information, call Nestle at 800-350-5016.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
