Well, at least one manufacturer is, and for that reason the Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 600 Sun Smarties Board Skirts. The lead paint is in the grommets.

The skirts are peach microfiber with an embroidered flower accent and back pocket. You can find Item Number 13926 HIBI printed on the care label inside the back of the waistband. The skirts were sold in girls sizes 12 months to 4T. They have six grommets, four on the front of the waistband and two on the back pocket.

As mentioned, these were made in China for Chelsea & Scott Ltd. and sold exclusively at One Step Ahead from May 1, 2008 through May 9, 2008 for about $15 each.

If you have one of these skirts, you should immediately take it away from your child and return it to Chelsea & Scott Ltd to receive a replacement skirt or refund. You will be sent a postage paid envelope from the company.

For more information, contact Chelsea & Scott Ltd by calling (866) 271-4536 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, visit their Web site, or email them at customerservice@onestepahead.com.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The new school uniform - prison jumpsuits

Filed under: Teens & tweens, Education, Kid decor & style
As an alternative to sending kids home or having them sit in a room by themselves for the remainder of the day, one Texas high school is planning on having dress code violators cover up the problem by putting on prison-style jumpsuits. In fact, it's not just the styling that's big house -- the jumpsuits are actually made by prison labor.

Not surprisingly, the plan doesn't sit well with everyone. Parents are concerned about the message the jumpsuits convey and the ACLU is worrying about infringing the students' right to express themselves. "Public school dress codes should be limited to what's necessary to guard against actual disruption to the educational process and threats to safety," said Fleming Terrell, a lawyer with the ACLU of Texas. "The jumpsuits may be just as distracting as the clothing they're replacing."

Terrell may very well be right. The one group that seems to be unconcerned -- and perhaps even looking forward to the new threads -- is the students themselves. "I don't think that jumpsuits are going to work, because my friends actually, instead of it being a punishment, they'll see it as an opportunity to be like, rebels," said Jordan Meredith, the senior class president. "I don't think there's going to be enough jumpsuits for everyone in the school." He's already heard from kids who plan to violate the dress code on purpose just to be able to wear one and is thinking of buying his own to wear.

I'm not sure I approve of dress codes (I've killed a few off during my professional career and never would have paid attention to one in school) but I also think that no matter what teachers and administrators do, kids will find a way to express themselves. As long as they do it in a positive, non-disruptive way, I don't have a problem with that.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Baby Appleseed cribs

Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Health & safety, In the news, Kid decor & style, Sleep, Shopping & recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced yet another crib recall. This time, about 500 Baby Appleseed Davenport Cribs are being recalled because they fail to meet federal safety standards for cribs. These cribs have a two-mattress support system and the secondary one, used for the lowest position, doesn't meet the full 26 inch minimum height requirement in its lowest position. This could allow a child to crawl over the railing and fall out of the crib.

These were made in Vietnam for by Baby Appleseed and sold at specialty juvenile product stores nationwide from December 2006 through September 2007 for between $600 and $800 each.

The recalled cribs are the Davenport models that begin with model numbers 273 and have manufacture dates on or before August 2007. You can find the manufacture date printed on a label on the right side of the lower inner panel of the crib. Newer Davenport cribs with model numbers beginning with 244 and having just one mattress support are not included in the recall.

If you have one of these cribs, you should stop using it in the third lowest position, which uses the wooden mattress support. If you are currently using the crib with the metal mattress support in the top or middle positions, you can continue to do so while awaiting a repair kit. Repair Kits will be available from the firm in mid-August 2008.

To receive your repair kit, contact Baby Appleseed by calling (877) 348-2199 anytime or by visiting their Web site.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard Cribs - Product Recall

Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Health & safety, Kid decor & style, Sleep, Shopping & recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 1,300 Mother Hubbard's Cupboard cribs. The cribs fail to meet federal safety standards in that the distance between the mattress support bracket in the lowest position and the top of the side rail in the highest position is less than the required 26 inches. This poses a fall hazard to children.

The recall involves wooden full-sized cribs in the following models: Enchantment (model #210), Hush A Bye (model #215), Once Upon A Time (model #320) and Rock A Bye (model #1900-359). Only cribs with date codes from 0306 through 0308 are included in this recall. You can find the words "Mother Hubbard's Cupboards", the model number and date code printed on a label on the bottom inside of the right side of the crib.

The cribs were sold at juvenile product stores from March 2006 through March 2008 between $500 and $650 each. More pictures of the recalled cribs can be found here.

If you have one of these cribs, you should stop using it immediately and contact Mother Hubbard's Cupboards to receive instructions on how to reinstall the support brackets and eliminate the hazard. You can reach them by calling (888) 661-8201 between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday and between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET Friday and Saturday, or by visiting their Web site.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

ParentWish - Blabla Monkey Backpack

Filed under: Kid decor & style
Item: Blabla Monkey Backpack
Price: $42.00
Why we love it: It's handknit, unique and DARLING. Some may disagree, but I think tiny skirts, skimpy tops, underwear-revealing baggy pants and all those other banned garments really don't contribute anything to the learning process.

Of course, if you have rules, you must also have consequences for breaking those rules. I don't know how other schools handle students who violate the dress code, but the Gonzalez Independent School District in Texas has come up with a stricter code and a sure-fire way to discourage violations. After the first day of school, any student coming to school in violation of the dress code will be provided alternative clothing. This alternative clothing consists of a shapeless, dark blue, button-front jumpsuit that looks a lot like what you might see a mechanic wear. Or a plumber. Certainly not your average fashion-conscious teenager.

Parents are upset about the stricter dress code, mostly due to the timing. Many had already done their back-to-school shopping before the new code was implemented and now find much of what they bought is banned. Students say the code is too strict and that they would rather wear an orange jumpsuit every day than comply. Get it? Like they are prisoners of the Gonzalez Independent School District.

I think they all need to take a deep breath and listen to the wisdom of Class of '08 graduate Amy Ferguson. "I don't see why people are making such a big deal about this. We're going to have to wear uniforms for jobs. Plus they aren't being as strict as they could be,"

And then, if they still want to wear orange jumpsuits, I say let them.

%Gallery-28708%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Costco pillows

Filed under: Health & safety, Kid decor & style, Shopping & recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 120,000 Cuddly Comfort Pillows. Due to a mechanical breakdown in the manufacturing process, some pillows contain metal fragments in the fiber-fill, which could cause abrasions to consumers.

These were made in China, imported by Sleep Innovations, and sold at certain Costco stores nationwide from February 2008 through June 2008 for about $20 each.

The Cuddly Comfort Pillows were sold in packs of two in white, violet, blue, pink and yellow. They measure 20" wide by 26" long and only those with Registration Number PA-27156(CA) are included in the recall. You can find the Registration Number and the words "Sleep Innovations" printed on the pillow's tag.

If you have these pillows, you should immediately stop using them and return them to any Costco store for a full refund. The warmer weather is just beckoning our kids to come outside and play on the green lawn. This month, I had the chance to try out some of this summer's coolest products with the help of a few kid testers.

The three products we put to the test were the Wiggling Water Snake by Small World Toys, the Noddo Croquet Set from The Land of Nod, and the Sand and Water Table from One Step Ahead.

I must say that our kid testers loved all three products, and the parents were pleased as well. Check out the Tried and True photo gallery for shots of the kids in action, and continue reading on for the pros and cons of each product!

%Gallery-27503%
From Small World Toys, the Wiggling Water Snake is described as:

Its time for summer fun and giggle with our exciting Water Wiggles! Attaching easily to your garden hose, this 20' long sprinkler snake brings all the fun of a water park straight to your back yard! Constructed from durable PVC with no inflation required, water wiggles are a safe, fun way to cool down on hot days. Children can coil this sprinkler snake up or lay him out straight, then turn on the hose to spray water in every direction for an afternoon of super-soaked fun!

Pros:

The snake sprinkler is included in the 3-5 years category on Small World Toys, but the younger toddlers absolutely loved it.

Extremely easy to set up and store.

Perfect for toddlers - the streams shoot about 4 feet in the air, and the pressure isn't too forceful.

Can be manipulated into several shapes (a straight line, a squiggle, a circle, etc.)

Makes an excellent lawn sprinkler. (Seriously!)

Cons:

If you're looking for a higher-pressured water toy with lots of bells and whistles, this probably isn't the right one for you.

From the Land of Nod, the Noddo Croquet Set is described as:

Noddo and friends have gotten themselves into a sticky wicket. Well, to be accurate, they've been fashioned into wooden croquet wickets.

This Web Only Nod Classic includes 2 mallets, 2 polka dot balls, 6 multi-patterned wickets and 24 stands for indoor and outdoor play. Ages 3 and up.

Pros:

This was my favorite toy of the three, due to its versatility, style and fun-factor.

Online customer rating is a 4.7 out of 5.

Absolutely darling animal illustrations.

Easy setup and storage.

Comes with indoor/outdoor wicket stands for year-round play.

Recommended for age 5+, but our toddler testers had a blast rolling the balls through wickets.

Adults can play too.

It's on sale right now!

Cons:

The paint on the croquet balls chips off quickly.

From One Step Ahead, the Sand and Water Table is described as:

Do toddlers ever get tired of scooping, sifting, and splashing? Not the ones we know - that's why sand and water tables are a backyard must! After surveying the market, we chose this one. Unlike others, it collapses for easy end-of-summer storage. And it includes more toys, plus a neat ledge to hold them! Molded cover has recessed roadway on top. 10-minute assembly. For ages 18 months and up. Colors may vary.

Pros:

Online customer rating is 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Easy setup - it took 8 minutes to assemble the table completely.

It breaks down into an easy-to-store module.

Relatively easy to clean.

The water tower toys in the middle aren't stationery. You can move them into whatever position or height works best for your child.

It's on sale right now!

Cons:

The table can get really messy. (Con for parents, but a pro for toddlers!)

Unlike traditional latex balloons, Mylar balloons can last for several weeks before deflating. Latex balloons sink and shrivel up within a day of being inflated, generally. So it's understandable why they have become such a large part of the celebration industry.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to Mylar balloons too. If released, the electrically conductive inflatables can -- and do, on a regular basis, apparently -- short out power lines, causing outages and costing businesses as much as $120 million in California alone last year. And so it is that Senate Bill 1499 is making its way through various committees on its way to becoming law. If it is passed, the bill would ban the sale of helium-filled Mylar balloons.

%Gallery-27399%
The Save the Balloons coalition has been formed to try and save the businesses and jobs that would be affected if the bill passes. While I do like getting the kids a decorative Mylar balloon for their birthday, I also don't like it at all when the power goes out. I suppose the best solution would be for manufacturers to come up with an alternative material that will last as long as Mylar, can be made into an equal array of shapes and, most importantly, is non-conductive.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
